Travis Wake Charters

Work with us: captains, deckhands, instructors, camp counselors and general help for the Lake Travis season

Travis Wake Charters is one wake boat, one pontoon and a small crew running captained charters, private wakesurf lessons and a kids summer camp out of Hudson Bend on Lake Travis, just west of Austin. The season is Memorial Day to Labor Day and the work is mostly Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with lessons and camp days in the week. We hire a few people a year, train them on our boat, and the ones who are good come back the next summer.

Pick the seat that fits and apply below. If none of the titles fit and you just want to work, apply for general help and tell us what you can do.

01

Captain

Drives the boat, runs the safety briefing and has the final word on the water.

Pay

$21.50 to $42.50 an hour, plus tips

$21.50 to start on our boat; $42.50 driving a guest's own boat as captain for hire.

Apply as captain

What you do

  • · Drive the Nautique (and the pontoon) for captained charters, lessons and camp days on Lake Travis.
  • · Read the safety briefing out loud before every departure and keep to the safety rules without exceptions.
  • · Dock and pick up at private docks and at our usual spot in Hudson Bend, in wind, with a boat full of guests.
  • · Set up the surf wave and the wakeboard wake (ballast, speed, side) and tow riders with an observer in place.
  • · Do the pre-check and post-check in the crew app: life jackets counted, drain plug, throwable, extinguisher, fuel, engine hours, photos.
  • · Make the weather call. Lightning in the area means riding stops and you head in.
  • · Keep the trip on time and the guests happy, then ask for the review, the rebook and the referral at the dock.

02

Deckhand

Helps the captain: lines, gear, spotting riders and looking after guests.

Pay

$17.50 an hour plus tips

Apply as deckhand

What you do

  • · Load the boat before the trip: boards, ropes, vests, cooler with ice and water, towels, tube and lily pad if booked.
  • · Fit life jackets on every rider and every kid, and check them again before the engine starts.
  • · Handle the lines at the dock and at pickups; tie off clean and fast.
  • · Be the observer: eyes on the rider the whole time they are being towed, and call it to the captain.
  • · Help guests in and out of the water, hand up boards, coil ropes, keep the deck clear.
  • · Count the gear back, wash the boat and leave it ready for the next trip.

03

Instructor

Coaches riders on private lessons, at camp and on charters, and gets first-timers up.

Pay

$20.00 to $37.50 an hour, plus tips

$20.00 to start on our boat; $37.50 coaching on a guest's own boat.

Apply as instructor

What you do

  • · Teach private wakesurf and wakeboard lessons: body position on land first, then the rope, then the wave.
  • · Coach riders on charters so everyone who wants a turn gets up, including the nervous ones and the kids.
  • · Run the on-water side of summer camp days with the captain.
  • · Progress a rider who can already get up: carving, crossing the wake, dropping the rope, first tricks.
  • · Double as the observer and as a deckhand on a trip when that is what the boat needs.
  • · Spot the guest who is hooked after one session and tell them what a private lesson is.

04

Summer camp counselor

Looks after the kids at summer camp, on the boat and on the dock, from drop-off to pickup.

Pay

$17.50 an hour to start

Apply as summer camp counselor

What you do

  • · Meet the kids and parents at drop-off, check everyone in, and hand them back at pickup with a story about their day.
  • · Head counts every time the group moves: dock to boat, boat to water, water to boat, boat to dock.
  • · Life jackets on and fitted before the engine starts, sunscreen on, water in hands, hats on heads.
  • · Keep the group together and busy between turns: games, snacks, shade, the next rider ready at the platform.
  • · Help the instructor coach: hand up boards, cheer, watch the rider, swim out when a kid needs a hand.
  • · Notice the kid who is cold, scared, sunburnt or left out, and fix it before it becomes a bad day.

05

General help

For anyone who wants to work and does not need a title. Whatever the day needs, on and off the water.

Pay

Hourly, set by the job

Apply as general help

What you do

  • · Wash, detail and put away the boat and the pontoon after trips and at the end of a weekend.
  • · Gas cans at the storage unit, ice and water before trips, the store run when something is short.
  • · Keep the storage unit, the gear and the trailer in order and tell Joe what is worn out or missing.
  • · Dock help on busy weekends: lines, loading, pointing guests to the right boat.
  • · Put up and check our signs and flyers around the lake and at partner businesses.
  • · Pack and ship hats and shirts from the shop, and help at events and demo days.

If you have not heard back within two weeks, we are full for now and we keep your application for the next opening.
