Parent handbook

Everything you need before camp week

Four days of wakesurfing and wakeboarding on Lake Travis for ages 8 to 14, Monday to Thursday, 9 AM to 3 PM. Read this once before Monday and you will know exactly how the week works.

01Welcome

Thank you for trusting us with your kid for a week on the water. Camp is small on purpose: eight campers a week, one boat, and coaches who spend every summer teaching kids to ride. The goal is simple. Your camper goes home tired, happy, and riding something they could not ride on Monday.

02Where and when

Days
Monday to Thursday. Camp ends Thursday on purpose: Friday lake traffic makes the water rougher.
Hours
Drop-off at 9:00 AM, pickup at 3:00 PM.
Place
Mansfield Dam Park on Lake Travis. The park charges an entry fee at the gate. We meet you at the boat ramp area and text the exact spot the week before.
Ages
8 to 14, worked out from your camper’s birthday against the first day of camp.
Before Monday
A parent or legal guardian completes the camp packet online, from the link in your registration email: waiver, medical consent, allergies and medications, swim ability, pickup list and the camp rules. About ten minutes on a phone, nothing to print. A camper without a signed packet cannot get on the boat.

03Payment

Camp is $1,000 per camper for the week, paid once by card when you register. There is no deposit, no balance charged later and nothing to pay at drop-off. Lunch, snacks, water, gear and instruction are all in that price.

Need to change weeks or cancel? Call or text Joe at 512-839-4573 as early as you can.

05How we coach

Kids keep riding when they feel successful, and they quit when they get hurt. So we coach for small wins and soft falls.

  • Start on land. Body position and the rope get practiced before anyone is pulled up.
  • Slow first. We keep the boat as slow as the trick allows while a camper is learning it, then build speed back up.
  • Right board, right wave. Boards are picked for each camper’s size and level, and the wave is set for whoever is riding.
  • Every step counts. Getting up, carving, crossing the wake: each one gets celebrated the same.
  • Fair turns. Riders rotate through the day so everyone gets multiple sets, with swimming, tubing and games in between.

06What is included

  • Instruction

Hands-on coaching from instructors who work with kids every summer.

  • Lunch

A real lunch, all four days. Nothing to pack.

  • Snacks and water

Snack breaks through the morning and afternoon, cold water all day.

  • Equipment

Boards, life vests and safety equipment, all provided.

  • The boat

A Nautique surf boat that throws a real wave to learn on.

  • Photos and video

Professional shots of your camper's progress through the week.

  • Certificate

Campers who complete the week receive a Travis Wake Charters Certification for Surfers, our certificate of the skills covered.

Allergies or dietary needs: put them on the registration form and we plan lunch around them. Your camper is welcome to bring their own lunch too.

07What to pack

  • Swimsuit, worn to camp
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen, put on before drop-off (we reapply through the day)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Hat and a rash guard or sun shirt
  • A dry change of clothes for the ride home
  • Their own board or life jacket, only if they want to (we provide both)

Leave phones and valuables at home or in the car. There is nowhere dry to keep them.

08Camper rules

  1. Life jackets on, every camper, every time they are in the water or the boat is moving.
  2. Sit down whenever the boat is moving.
  3. The driver's seat and helm are off limits.
  4. Coaches handle the ropes, boards and rack unless they hand you a job.
  5. Nobody gets on or off the boat without a coach saying so.
  6. When swimming, stay close to the boat where we can see you.
  7. Hands to yourself, kind words only. We cheer for every rider.

09Weather and lightning

Light rain does not stop camp. Lightning does. The captain watches the radar and the sky all day and makes the call on the water, not off a forecast.

  • If there is lightning in the area, riding stops, every camper comes aboard with their life jacket buckled, and we head to shore and shelter.
  • We wait until the storm has clearly moved off before anyone goes back out.
  • We text parents whenever we shelter, with the plan and the expected wait.
  • If weather ends a day early, we call you to arrange an early pickup.

10Emergencies

  • For any serious injury or a camper in trouble in the water, the boat stops and we call 911 first.
  • The boat carries a full set of safety equipment, including life jackets for every person aboard and a throwable flotation device.
  • We contact you right away about any injury, however small, and tell you what happened and what we did.
  • Keep the emergency contact and medical details on your registration current. Text us if anything changes before camp.
